4192 view(s)

Whenever the weather gets cold, many people get sick. There’s this saying “coldness causes illness”, Chinese medicine doctor believes that “coldness is the reason to all sorts of sickness”. Indeed, many sickness can be traced back to low body temperature. Although in Taiwan, you won’t experience extreme coldness during the winter, the temperature varies a lot from day to night. If the temperature suddenly drops, the human body temperature may fail to coordinate accordingly, thus causing many illnesses.

According to Dr. Chen from the Chinese medicine department of Taipei Tzu Chi Hospital, there are 6 body parts that must be kept warm all the time since these body parts are in charge of the main body functions. If they get cold, the body will likely become sick. Here’s how it works.

The 6 Body Parts that Must be Kept Warm

1. Neck

Since the blood circulation in the neck is the quickest, and there are the feng-chi acupuncture point, feng-men acupuncture point and feng-fu acupuncture point. These acupuncture points are most likely to be affected by the cold. Hence, it is essential to keep the neck warm.

Tip: Wear a scarf to prevent the neck from being exposed to the wind.

2. Shoulder

If the shoulder gets cold, pain may arise.

Tip: Sleep with the blanket pulled up to your shoulders to keep them warm at night.

3. Back

The back is in charge of transmitting positive-chi to all parts of the body. If the back gets cold, the lungs may be weakened which may lead to coughing and other illnesses. For women, this may even cause irregular periods, menstrual cramps and waist pain.

Tip: Wear a cape, sleeveless sweater to keep the back warm.

4. Belly button

When the belly button gets cold, the digestive system may be affected which may lead to diarrhea.

Tip: When you’re outside, wear your clothes properly, when you sleep, make sure to cover yourself with a blanket lest your belly button gets cold.

5. Knee

If the knee gets cold, it will become stiffen and sore. This is especially common amongst girls wearing shorts.

Tip: Bring extra clothes or blankets to keep warm

6. Sole of foot

Since the sole of foot is the part of the body that is the farthest to the heart, it is at the bottom of the circulation, thus the ability for it to remain warm is relatively hard. In addition, there are a lot of acupuncture points on the sole of the foot, once they become cold, there may be detrimental effect on the blood circulation.

Tip: Wear thick socks when sleeping, or soak your feet in hot water before going to bed.
