The temperature varies a lot from day to night in autumn, thus it is common to suffer from respiratory issues. The symptoms may also change with the weather. If neglected, the body may be greatly harmed. Traditional Chinese medicine doctors recommend the consumption of these white food to moisturize the body, so the body can be strong enough to defeat the diseases that winter brings.

Traditional Chinese medicine doctors believe that autumn is the season where the lungs are at their strongest state, and should therefore be well protected and kept healthy so as to strengthen the body immune system and avoid illness.

“Harvest in the autumn and store in the winter”, autumn is the season where the “Chi” needs to be astringed. Doctor Chen believes that autumn causes dry mouth, dry skin and discomfort throughout the body. In this period, the most important thing to do is “moisturizing the body “starting from saliva.

The Dryness in Autumn Affects the Respiratory System

“Lungs are in charge of air”, Doctor Chen explains that lungs are in charge of the air exchange, the inhale of oxygen, the exhale of carbon dioxide, giving oxygen to the blood and improving blood circulation. The so-called “lungs” in Chinese medicine does not only refer to lungs, but also lungs-related respiratory system including mouth, nose, throat, trachea, bronchus, bronchiole, and even our otter skin, which is why there’s this saying “lungs govern the skin and hair.”

Doctor Wu points out that the weather becomes dry in the autumn, not only does mouth and skin become dry, but the hair becomes dry, too, which causes hair loss. Hence, it is crucial to moisture the lungs and other body parts.

Consume more Pears, Snow Fungus, and avoid Spicy Grilled Food

Doctor Wu suggests that the consumption of juicy and easy-to-digest food such as pears, grapes, soy milk in the autumn is important as it moistures the organs. In the same time, spicy food such as pepper, chilly, potato chips, fried chicken and other greasy and grilled food should be avoided to prevent the dryness from getting worse.

Since the lungs are classified as white in the five colors of the Chinese medicine. Doctor Chen points out that consuming white food can do good to the body and maintain a healthy balance while strengthening the immune system. Such food include lily, liriope, snow fungus, yuzhu, almond, coasial glehnia root, water chestnut. In addition, fistular onion stalk, raw ginger, garlic can also help prevent diseases.
