Watermelon is a must-eat fruit in Summer, it not only is it a great way to beat the summer heat, it also can also help you stay hydrated. Watermelon contains a large percentage of water, and is also highly nutritious, making it very beneficial to the human body.
6 Benefits of Watermelon to the Human Body
1. Relief muscle soreness
Watermelon contains a special amino acid called “citrulline”, it can stimulate protein synthesis and decrease amino acid breakdown to reduce muscle soreness.
2. Keep you hydrated
Watermelon contains about 92 percent of water, and is low in fat. Consuming fruits with large amount of water can help keep the body hydrated and causes satiety.
3. Ameliorate cardiovascular disease
Watermelon contains many ingredients beneficial to the heart, including lycopene, citrulline, vitamin A, vitamin B6, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium. Citrulline can increase the level of nitric oxide in the body, which helps expand blood vessels and lower blood pressure. Also, according to research, lycopene may help lower cholesterol and reduce bad cholesterol oxidation.
4. Prevent macular degeneration
Lycopene has antioxidant and anti-inflammatory qualities which can help keep the eyes healthy and prevent age-related eye diseases such as macular degeneration. When it comes to lycopene, the first thing many people think of is tomato. Actually, watermelon also contains high level of lycopene. When watermelon is stored at room temperature, it can preserve the highest level of lycopene.
5. Maintain healthy skin
Watermelon contains two types of vitamin: vitamin A and C. These two vitamins can greatly affect our skin and hair health. Vitamin A can repair skin cells. The skin will become dry and desquamated if the body does not have enough vitamin A. Vitamin C can help the body produce collagen, which can make the skin fairer, more elastic, and the hair healthier and stronger.
6. Improve digestion
Watermelon is high in water and dietary fiber, both of which are important to our digestion system. Water can help lubricate the intestines and stimulate peristalsis; dietary fiber can increase the amount of food in the stomach and intestine, thus promoting peristalsis while increasing the volume of feces and accelerating the speed of eliminating the waste.
