Exhausted From Taking Care of Others: Resources For Caretakers

According to statistics, there are around 700 thousand people in need of homecare services, out of these 700 thousand people, 65% rely on their family members, including spouse, children, or perhaps even you or me in the future.

In average, caretakers spend around 11 hours a day for up to 8 years or even longer. As a caretaker, have you realized what the problem is? Do you know how to take care of yourself? Gan Dan Academy has invited Director Yu-Chen, Shih and Social Worker Yi-Chun, Chiu from the Taichung Government Caregiver Service Center Shan-Ur Branch to share with us the all the problems caretakers face as well as the resources for these people.

★Target Clients

Those who are taking care of an elderly above 65 years old, or an aboriginal or person with disability above 50 years old.


★Service Scope

1. Individual management: Family social worker works with caretaker to expand and strengthen the official resources and network needed.

2. Telephone support: Provide telephone support, while delivering information regarding resources and events for caretakers, supporting them in every way.

3. Consulting: Consult a consultant or social worker to deal with the emotions emerged from taking care of others.

4. Stress-relief activities: Hold numerous stress-relief events with a variety of themes, giving caretakers a way to relax and reduce stress.

5. Homecare techniques: Free on-site homecare training from nurses or therapists.

6. Support groups: Support one another by sharing experiences and feelings with a group of caretakers.

7. Caretaking courses: Provide different courses according to the needs or questions of each caretaker.

8. Substitute service: Send over a substitute worker to help the family when the original caretaker is attending events. (Does not affect long-term care quota)
