How to choose a commode according to different needs?
Although we have flush toilets now, it is much safer for disabled elderlies to use “commode!”
Amazing ways to use a commode
One: Place it near the bed as a portable toilet
If the elderlies walk slow or have urinary system problems, such as benign prostatic hyperplasia, causing them to suffer urgent urination, they may fall down if the urge to urinate comes on very suddenly.
Some elderlies are afraid to drink water, which leads to constipation or even dehydration, seriously affecting their health. Some families opt to having the elderlies wear diapers.
If you use the commode properly however, it is like having a portable toilet beside the bed. It is especially safe and useful when elderlies need to use the bathroom during night time when they are less vigilant.
Two: Place it in the shower room as a shower chair
We all know the most common place where fall occurs is the “shower room”, a safer way is to “take a shower while seated.” There is a saying, “stand and shower and prepare to fall.” The commode is an excellent shower chair. Taking a shower is wet and the soap makes it even more slippery, the design of a commode prevents the person sitting on it from slipping. If a caretaker is in charge to take a shower for the elderly, the design of the commode makes it easier to clean the intimate parts, making the process of taking a shower safer and more convenient.
Three: Place it on top of a toilet to increase the height and act as an armrest
Some commodes can be placed directly on top of the toilet. Take a close look at the space below the seat of the commode, if it is clear without any framework, then it can be used in this way. Placing the commode on top of the toilet increases the height of the toilet and acts as an armrest to prevent falling, plus, the armrest can be used to help the elderly stand up. This is especially helpful for the elderlies who find it difficult to stand up after sitting on a low toilet.
Four: Access the bathroom fast
If the elderly has difficulty walking, “commode with wheels” is the perfect tool. It can be used to take elderlies to the bathroom immediately. The commode with wheels are equipped with a brake so it can be fixed safely, it is as safe as commode without wheels.
However, do bear in mind that when an elderly get on or get off a commode with wheels, it is crucial to remove the pedal in case the pedal gets mistaken as the floor and gets stepped on, causing the commode to fall over.
Types of commode
Does the commode include wheels? Can it be folded? Can it be placed on top of the toilet? These three essential factors can divide common commodes into 4 categories.
Keep in mind the following formula when picking a commode:
Need help standing up? Try the one that can be placed on top of the toilet;
Need help walking? Pick the one with wheels;
Shower room too small? Choose the one that can be placed on top of the toilet;
Want to carry it around? Try the one that can be folded
Reminder: Use assistive devices wisely and help elderlies improve their quality of lives. Even the caretaker will feel less stressed!
