Intellectual Trip

Fagushan International Buddhism Education Center

As the bus approached Fagushan, we saw a building in brown, grey and white. We felt the lively vibe within this tranquil place. The sisters of Fagushan led us to walk and put ‘soul recycle into practice. As we walked in the woods, we immersed ourselves in the clam and sacred feeling of being with nature.

Body-Building Trip

Doing Taiji at Taiwan’s biggest outdoor museum – Ju Ming Museum

I think the most quirky trip of all is doing Taiji!

The teachers at Ju Ming Museum thought this was a group of seniors, so they only taught us some basic gestures at the beginning. However, soon after they found out that all members were very energetic and athletic, and can easily complete different gestures.

An 82-year-old man in our group was especially vigorous. Out of curiosity, I asked about his past and was amazed to find out that he is a member of the Go Grandriders. He had once ridden from Hualien to Pingtung on his motorbike. What a robust man! This Senior Travel includes Taiji and DIY, we didn’t just walk around aimlessly, this is one of the most well-designed parts of the trip.

The Ju Ming Museum in New Taipei city has been elected as the top three museums in Taiwan by Trip Advisor’s “Traveler’s Choice”.

The tour in the Ju Ming Museum was very clear. We had a lot of time to hang around and interact with the artworks. I was stunned by how close we were to these masterpieces. Art is life; life is art!

DIY bag is a fun experience. You can choose from ‘kneeling on one side’ to ‘cross hands’ image to spray-paint on the bag. It is an easy and interesting experience.

Foodie’s Trip

Lunch: Kingshan Duck

Kingshan Duck is a self-serve restaurant where you need to bring your own food to the table. Our group members divided up the jobs. Some stayed behind to watch over our belongings, some went to bring the dishes, some went to clean the table and get utensils. No one complained, in fact, everyone did a great job, and soon after we were able to dig in. Seniors are very good at these small house chores; this is what makes them different.

Kingshan Duck Recommended: Duck, braised bamboo, Chinese sauerkraut with large intestine, fried shishamo, braised bitter melon

After dining at Kingshan Duck, we went to the old streets and bought icy roasted sweet potato, Shu Tong Yao sweet potato chips, Chinese licorice and peanuts. We’ve really supported Taiwan’s economy. What a feat!

Relax Trip

Dinner at the hot spring hotel – YangMingShan Tien Lai Resort & Spa

Laughter can be heard from our table. Such a pleasant vibe and happy moment to sit with these new friends. When wife and husband introduce themselves, the husband said “my wife is the talkative one and I’m the handy one at home” This is how it’s like when people at this age hang out, they won’t mind a little teasing. Seniors just want to have fun!

Mei Shi Breakfast has freshly made egg rolls and noodles. Japanese mackerel, Cantonese dim sum and preserved egg with mincemeat porridge are all popular choices.

Yangmingshan Tien Lai Resort & Spa has the biggest out door hot spring facility. They have 13 pools including hot spring, cold spring, icy water spring, bubble massage pool, shower pool, dead skin-eating fish pool, sauna, half-outdoor naked pool, etc. This spring at Tien Lai Resort is from the East and North side of Yangmingshan, it is said to be a hidden gem for hot spring lovers.

We stayed in accessible rooms, with handrails and other extra facilities. This is a resort equipped with capsule coffee.

Leisure Trip

2019 New sightseeing spot / Taiwan’s most beautiful coastline bike trail

Shenao bike rail goes from Shenao station to Badouzi station. We spent around 10 minutes and covered 1 kilometer. We went past the beautiful coastline and the tunnel with special lighting effects.

Intellectual Trip

2018 New Open – World Class Paradise/Heping Island Park

Without a tour, you won’t be able to fully understand the geology of Heping Island park. Mr. Gan was a tour guide of the day, he was about the same age as us, with a steady temple when speaking. He only stops and explains when we come to a place where the wind couldn’t get to us which is a really considerate. This is the good part about having a tour guide who is about the same age as you are– he understands your needs without you telling him.

2019 New attraction / Grand Hotel Taipei Secret Passage

Ever since Grand Hotel Taipei opened up its secret passage to the public, it became a popular spot. In the one-hour tour, our guide Mr.Chen led us on a wonderful exploration. In order to fully understand this place, it is important to go with the paid-tour instead of just hanging around.

Behind the doors are 2 staircases each with 74 steps. It is said that under Chiang Kai-Shek’s rule, the way to evacuate is to hug the leader and slide down, then carry the leader. After experiencing the tense vibe for 5 minutes, we left the place. I urged our most senior members Mr. and Mrs. Gao to take a photo so as to remember they’ve been here. Mr. Gao is a retired soldier. He shared his retirement plan with me, and said “nothing is more important than your health!” Seeing how robust he has been the last two days; I truly agree with what he said.

It was a really heartfelt moment when our group member performed a sign language song “Hope We Meet Again” to our guide Mr. Chen.

Foodie’s Trip

Lunch: Yoshin Seafood Restaurant

This restaurant is very popular! We could tell that this is a place where locals bring their friends. They even have their own fishing boat, which is how the food remain so fresh. We couldn’t help smiling as we enjoy the delicacies.

Recommended dishes: juicy chicken, it’s really chewy. I found out that only one 70-year-old member in our group has all his real teeth instead of implants, how lucky! The cold plate sashimi was also very delicious! Shrimp with garlic smells so great I was overwhelmed by the lovely taste. Beneath it was a tofu soaked in rich soy sauce, what a great appetizer. The meatball with flying fish egg was also incredibly tasty.

Dinner: Wan Lin Braised Pork

Wan Lin Braised Pork is an all-you-can-eat restaurant. However, we decided not to eat that much as it’s not good for our body. The interior of the restaurant is very clean and well-designed. The pork is not too fat and goes really well with the rice.

Traveling With Grandma

Happy age! Happy travel! Happy life! Maintaining a nice tempo while traveling is very important, don’t rush to visit all places. Having a guide explaining all the stuff to us really helped broaden our horizons and made our trip much more meaningful. The food doesn’t have to be in large portions, but they have to be authentic and trustworthy. Senior has a senior way of traveling and enjoying life.
